Here at Artistique we take pride in celebrating fantastic illustrative artwork and Michael Wylie is no exception! He has currently been focusing on a series of iconic building typography illustrations. Made even more potent by the recent events occurring not only in the UK, but across the world. Her explains each piece below:
Manchester Is The Place Where People Do Things - "In this piece I have used a quote from 1912 by Judge Kerr who was a judge in Manchester for 25 years. The quote read, 'Manchester is the place where people do things, they don't just talk about it, they do it.' In this statement he was highlighting Manchester's and Mancunians industry and creativity. I have used a quote from Manchester's past but then used a building, Beetham Tower, which is a sign of Manchester's present/future as it is the tallest building in the city. Still no where near NYC skyscrapers!"
Liverpool Is The Pool Of Life, It Makes It To Live - "This was a statement made by the Swiss Psychologist Carl Jung who visited the city in the early 20th century and, much like the Manchester quote, made not of the creativity and ingenuity of the city. I have also used an image of the Royal Liver Building which features the Liver bird a top it, the symbol of Liverpool."
By Seeing London I Have Seen As Much Of Life As The World Can Show - "This quote was made by the English author Samuel Johnson in the mid 1700s. The statement is as true today as it was then. London thrives and grows by being diverse, where people of different cultures and socio-economic groups live side by side. The design features this iconic quote along with one of London's most famous landmarks, Big Ben which sits a top the Elizabeth Tower."
Paris Isn't A City It's A World - "This statement was made by King Francois I, who lived from 1494-1547. At the time Paris was a hive of activity, embracing new cultures and welcoming creatives and artists from all over the world. The same could be said about the city today. Incorporating this 500 year old statement along with the most iconic landmark in Paris, The Eiffel Tower, bringing the past and the present of this great city together."
There Is Something In The New York Air That Makes Sleep Useless - "French writer Simone de Beauvior made this observation during a trip to NYC in 1947. She said that New York affects you, it makes your heart beat faster and the days seem shorter, the pace and atmosphere of the city is like no other."
