Artistique x The New Yorker

As with most of our editorial commissions, the turn around is often tight and our recent collaboration with The New Yorker Magazine did not disappoint.

The project was to create illustrations to accompany a review for the recently released Netflix Originals series ‘The Chair’ starring two time Golden Globe Winner Sandra Oh, with the client selecting wonderful Gustavo Magalhaes to collaborate with.

This was Gustavo’s first project for The New Yorker, a milestone moment for any illustrator but also, the opportunity to illustrate an actor of Sandra Oh’s stature was doubly exciting, so Gustavo jumped headlong into sketching. Initial sketches had to be presented in the next 24hours but such was Gustavo’s immediate connection with the project he had 2 hight quality first round sketches within an hour after watching the programmes trailer.

These initial sketches were so strong the feedback was minimal in changes and high in praise and meant Gustavo now had made time for himself to really work on the detail of the final piece. This artwork was presented to The New Yorker and we soon received the wonderful news that there would be no further changes required and such was their love for the artwork that the project would be upgraded to a full page spread.
When a project like this comes along it is such a joy to see artist and client working in harmony. The below images show the project's progression from sketch to final piece and shows how an initial concept evolves and how a tight turn around is often a great way to focus the mind on creating the perfect illustration.
