Murder Takes a Vacation - Harper Collins

For Murder Takes a Vacation, HarperCollins required a concept-driven book cover illustration that could stand apart in a crowded crime and mystery fiction market while remaining tonally aligned with Laura Lippman’s writing.

With intentionally open creative direction, the project called for a strong editorial illustration approach that balanced wit, suspense, and narrative suggestion without leaning on conventional crime imagery.

Acting as an illustration agency for publishing, we supported the editorial team by developing and presenting multiple conceptual cover routes early in the process, enabling confident direction-setting within a compressed schedule.

Illustrator Beth Goody was selected for her ability to distil complex ideas into visually economical, highly readable artwork, using restrained colour and graphic composition to signal tone at a glance.

Through fast iteration, clear communication, and close alignment with the publisher’s objectives, the project moved efficiently from concept to final delivery, resulting in a distinctive book cover illustration optimised for retail visibility, digital listings, and long-term publishing use.
