For the Summer Stages issue, the Arts & Style team at The Washington Post commissioned a full-page editorial illustration to anchor coverage of outdoor performances across four distinct genres.
The brief called for a single, cohesive image that could live as a striking print opener while also functioning as a modular visual system, allowing elements to be extracted for interior pages and digital use. We collaborated closely with art direction to ensure the illustration balanced clarity and atmosphere, capturing a summery, optimistic tone with a sense of anticipation and discovery.
Collage artist Kazumi Komiya was selected for her ability to combine smart conceptual thinking with richly imaginative imagery, bringing together theatrical, musical, and performative references into one harmonious composition.
The final artwork delivered a versatile piece of illustrated editorial design, capable of supporting both print and online layouts while unifying multiple cultural disciplines within a single visual narrative.
